Let's all enjoy a nice time with grumpy santaman.

Name: Olaf
Age: late-50s
Birthday: December 21st
Gender: Male
Blood Type: Antifreeze
Height: As tall as Santa
Weight: Fat. 300 lbs? 325 lbs?

Game/Series: Advance Wars & Advance Wars: Black Hole Rising
Occupation(s): Permanent Substitute Teacher
Living Arrangements: TD-23
Extracurricular activities: Ice skating, skiing, hockey, scowling.

Personality:
Curmudgeonly. Olaf is not a kind man. He never has been. Has he always been like your crabby grandpa? Nobody knows. But that's how he acts now, so that's what we have to work with. Crabby grandpa.

Olaf believes the best way to show affection for people is to never be easy on them. This is to say Olaf rarely shows actual affection. The exception to this is Colin. For some reason, Olaf sees something in Colin (truckloads of cash money?) that takes the edge off of his grumpiness. Somewhat. He's still a bit gruff with him, but much, much less than with most people. In a rare moment, he'll actually confess that he appreciates you. Rarely. It's happened to Grit perhaps a half dozen times. Ever.

He gets angry easily. He's sort of an ass. He's Olaf. Winter is a harsh mistress, and Olaf's in her pocket. He's prideful and demanding. He's pigheaded and stubborn, and will do what he believes is needed to further his goals.

So, good points? Oh, he's got a couple. He's thorough. If he has a job he gets it done. He. . . has the personal skills of a bowl of oatmeal. That's not a good point. Okay so he has one good point.

Backstory:
Ahem. Quite some time ago, a boy was born in the snowy mountains of Blue Moon. This boy was named Olaf. He spent his days in chilly commune with nature, out and about in the snow with the other children. He was a pigheaded child, and insisted on getting his own way, and that worked out super great, let me tell you. Eventually he got engaged, as that's what people do when they reach a certain age. It was an engagement of convenience, as the girl didn't really care much for Olaf (who did?) and Olaf didn't have any possible way of expressing compassion for the girl except for not yelling obscenities at her. They got divorced several years later – it apparently wasn't convenient enough for the two of them. To escape his ex-wife, Olaf ended up moving to Orange Star, and enlisted in the army there. (He had been a lumberjack beforehand, jacking lumber, lumbering jacks, etc, etc, but Orange Star didn't really have the forests that Blue Moon did, which prompted the job change.)

Somehow Olaf rose through the ranks of Orange Star. Hachi must have been insane. Probably Olaf was good at it because he terrified other soldiers into fighting well. And Nell used to work under him. This was the start of a beautiful relationship (by beautiful I mean "strained, painful, and unhappy"). Eventualy, however, Olaf married again, this time to an Orange Star woman. And that worked out just as well as the first time. And so after a couple of years they divorced and Olaf, to escape his ex-wife, fled back to Blue Moon, leaving the Orange Star army. Since he'd been a big-wig in the Orange Star Army, the Blue Moon army snapped him up. After a time, he worked his way up to the top, and became the grumpy, unhappy leader of the entire country's army.

He got married a third time, and got a third divorce. His third wife was actually Arceus. YAY. (What's with all of the marriages you say? Well, Olaf felt that he deserved a wife. And he was going to have one, gosh darnit. And so he kept finding women stupid enough to marry him, but apparently not stupid enough to stick around for more than a couple of years of joyless existence). At this point he just gave up and didn't run away, as he enjoyed being the head of the army (Nell moved up to command the Orange Star army by this point, and neither Green Earth nor Yellow Comet needed a leader).

And then the Black Hole Army showed up. And Olaf got sweet-talked by Strum into attacking Orange Star and other points, to increase Blue Moon's territory. Well that went over like a lead balloon. End result – Olaf got beaten by Andy and found out that he was just a pawn in the hands of some evil group of sucky people. And yet, for some reason beyond explanation, Olaf found he'd grown actually fond of Blue Moon, and of Grit and was sorry for what he'd done. For a couple of minutes.

The next thing Olaf knew, Black Hole was back and LASH HAD DESTROYED HIS HOMETOWN OH MY GOD OH MY GOD AAAAAAAAARGH RAAAAAAGE. No really. She did. RAGE. So much rage. But then eventually they beat them out of Blue Moon and Olaf showed, for about 2 minutes, appreciation for Grit and Colin and love for his country and joy. Don't worry, it didn't last long!

And a clone of him ran around and made Colin cry. But that's neither here nor there.

So, after the war Colin got sent off to school, and Grit got sent along to look after Colin. But Olaf worries. He's worried that Grit is slacking off and not doing anything. And so he's decided it's time that someone was around to make sure that Grit isn't being just a lazy idiot. And that someone is Olaf. He took up a teaching position at the school and reported in to be grumpy and cantankerous.

Other Information:

  • The recipient of most of Olaf's ire is Grit. It always will be. No-one else will ever feel the WINTER FURY of Olaf as much as Grit. Because Olaf actually likes Grit. Also maybe he's aware the Grit is a much better CO than he actually is. And he sees him as someday taking over control of Blue Moon from him. And so he is hardest on him because FOR THE GLORY OF BLUE MOON, etc, etc, etc.
  • The exception to this is Lash! Who destroyed his hometown. He actually hates her. Real hate. Real ire. Real wrath. They don't get along at all. He hates the fact that he can't crush her under his heel in battle anymore now that she's defected. But even with her, technically, on the side of the allied forces, he can barely mask his animosity towards her.
  • He likes snow! He doesn't like rain!
  • He dislikes his ex-wives. At least he used to - now he only dislikes two of them. The third one is Bob, and Olaf finds he can't hate her anymore, though she makes him feel old and sad now.
  • His special power is he makes it snow for two days. Or, he makes it snow for two days and it deals damage to everything on the first day.
