Personality:
Sonic's the name and Speed's his game. To say that his running skills don't affect his personality would be like saying the Chaos Emeralds doesn't affect Knuckle's life. Speed is a given to him, it is his legacy and what he does best.
He is fluid movement moving in perfect tandem. It almost looks like he can control the air, like a high choreographed speed ballet (oh god what did I just write). In fact, he can be faster than the speed of sound, if the situation calls for it. Many have theorized that Sonic's veins are filled with pure sugar and Powerthirst.
Things come and go. For someone who moves so much in his life, Sonic's pretty mellow about everything that happens in it. After all, he's fought time and time again against what were supposed to be unsurmountable odds and just shrugs whenever his least favourite mad scientist appears with a new machine. He knows he'll win in the end anyway. It's all about being cool and about looking bad ass doing it. There's nothing better like casually slipping a “you're too slow!†while blowing up Eggman's newest invention.
He's intelligent, to a fault. The speed in his legs also work in his cerebellum, and he can do remarkable things..if he takes the time to do them. Sonic doesn't do BORING. His IQ is not as high as Tails or Robonik, but Sonic does come with a remarkable dose of common sense. He knows when to start attacking and when to step back and let the others handle it. When threatened, he tends to take everything with a grain of salt, if no one life's is involved...after all, he knows he's damn awesome and insults just pass way over his head. The added bonus that this annoys of some of his foes makes it even better. He can dish it out as well, being a pro at snapping back insults at his foes with a remarkable calmness to other people few would even dare. He carries around his confidence in everything he does. No worries, no problem. If a friend's life is involved however? Sonic Boom. He'll let loose a barrage of insults and proceed to hand the persons ass back to them before they even have time to blink. No one messes with his friends (but him).
He's a hero, through and through. If you have a problem, he will do his best to help you out in any way he can. If you're a friend, he will be there through thick and thin, willing to risk his life for you, no hesitation. That is...if he feels it's worth the trouble. Sonic's not a fool, and wants his friends to grow stronger as well. If he feels that they would learn something from whatever trouble is plaguing them, he will not butt in unless he feels it is absolutely necessary. He is your older, big brother. Dangerous when angered, but teasing if he thinks you can manage on your own. He's extremely generous to his friends (to a fault).
Don't expect him to hang around for extended periods too much. Sonic is a hedgehog that enjoys adventure and exploring too much to be able to stay in once place for too long. School is the accepted hurdle he's set for himself, but adventure tends to find him there anyway, so he's quite content at learning and playing the hero at the same time.
He does have a strong weakness that is easy to exploit. No one tells him he's not the fastest thing alive. He will go out of his way to prove he is time and time again.

Backstory:
Sonic never really talks about his early years (if you ask him, he will tell you one day he got bored and came forth PIERCING THE HEAVENS). No one really knows where he comes from and Sonic has such a laissez-faire attitude that he doesn't really feel it necessary to mention. It was probably boring anyway.
What was probably less boring is when he started going on adventures! Sonic loved adventuring. Even as a kid, he'd go out of his way to either help people across the street or saving falling carriages from mothers not watching their kids. It was nothing big, but he got a 'hero's high' from doing it. He perfected his speed. He was going to be the fastest thing alive. As he grew up his adventures, become...much more dangerous. Then one day, some of his animal friends were captured by a man named Robotnik (although truth be told, he looked liked a giant egg, so he started calling him Eggy.)
Sonic single-handedly decide to take on this new menace by himself, freeing a lot of cute animals in capsules along the way. That was the first time he fought Eggman, and won (rather easily, he would tell you). He was addicted. He wanted more. As time went on, Eggman swore revenge and suddenly the Hedgehog found himself with an arch-enemy. After that, Sonic made sure to keep a somewhat watchful eye of him whenever he could, which, because he was adventuring so much, was hard to do. He met Tails along the way, and the unique two-tailed fox started to follow him. It was hard to keep up because of Sonic's speed, but he did well, and truth be told, Sonic did appreciate having a friend who could keep pace to help him defeat Eggman.
Later, Eggman managed to convince the Chaos Emerald's guardian named Knuckles that Sonic was TEH BAD and they met under the strangest of circumstances, with Knuckles smashing into him and taking all the Emeralds from him. Sonic, of course, set things straight and also became good friends with him, because well, he's Sonic, and Knuckles was just very gullible at the time (It's okay Knuckles. Sonic totally forgives you).
Eggman decided he's try capturing pretty girls next because the next thing you know, Sonic meets Amy and Eggman captures her. He kicked his ass, as usual, and Sonic now had everything a hero needs; friends, an arch-enemy and a GIRL STALKER. Not that he hated Amy, she was just...INCREDIBLY CLINGY and Sonic was a guy who liked to go and do his own thing.
This went on for a few more years. His friendly, but quirky, positive nature easily made him friends with many, and the bane of all villains. Sonic acted like a big brother, but he never stayed too long, always off somewhere else to save the day (Amy stalking him all the way). Whatever Eggman laid out for him, or any other villain, Sonic pressed on and fought.
...then realized he might need an education. After all, going fast was nice, but he needed to develop his skills in fighting. Sumabura was EXACTLY what he needed. There was only one problem. Not only did Eggman want him dead, but so did Eggman Nega, Eggman's counterpart from Blaze's world. And he would make a plan so STUPID on paper...it almost worked.
What he didn't know is that when he fought Eggman Nega, he had had slipped him something from his galaxy called the Pink Chaos Emerald. It had...unique properties. Sonic then went to Sumabura with the Emerald absorbed in his body. He fell in love. With a hedgehog named Silver. The Emerald made he think it was actually Silvera and he even ditched most of his friends to spend more time with her...him...something like that. Sonic became distant to everyone, but few took notice. After all, he was a hedgehog known to be somewhat aloof. Even when Knuckles arrived, Sonic barely talked with him. It was...odd. Even for Sonic.
In the end, he decided to skip school and head out with Silver to find Adventure. Only when he was busy fighting a cyborg ninja pirate, that the Pink Chaos Emerald finally fell out of his body and suddenly he found himself face on face with Silver and...it wasn't pretty. That is when Eggman Nega's final part of the plot came into place and turns out that Silver was actually robotic clone that Nega had built so he would kill Sonic. It activated just as the Emerald fell out and holy deus ex plot lines! In the end, Sonic totally kicked his ass (lol no, not that way), and finished fighting off the evil cyborg pirate ninja, winning the day, naturally.
One thumbs up and a wink to the audience later, he was back at Sumabura to start his school year anew because he sure doesn't really remember much of it! Or wishes he didn't, at least.

Fastest thing there is in Sumabura is more like it. Even worse if he somehow gets his hands on a bunnyhood. - The spikes on his back are very sharp
